A mixing engineer combines the different elements of a track or live performance by adjusting volume levels, adding effects and manipulating the frequencies and dynamics of the elements. The final result is called a mixdown and can be used for distribution on different kinds of media such as vinyl, CDs or digital formats such as WAV or streaming formats.

Mixing engineers often can also collaborate with the producer, vocalist and musicians to improve the overall structure of the track or to repair elements that need fixing.
