Studio monitors are combinations of speakers used to listen to audio in music (home) studios and come in active and passive modes.

Most “real” studio monitors are active, meaning that the monitors and even the individual speakers inside have their own power source. As each speaker has its own power, it is able to more accurately represent the intended frequency range of the sound.

Passive monitors are normally for casual listening and referred to as hi-fi speakers. They are however quite commonly used in home studios as well as they are often lower in cost.
