Drum machines generate drums, such as kicks, hi-hats, claps and percussion. Most drum machines come with a programming section to create beats patterns. Probably the most famous drum machines are the TR-909 and TR-808 of which you find drums in many current productions.

Samplers are used to record a piece of audio (sample) and provide the ability to edit, manipulate and play back the sampled sound through for example a midi connected controller.

Basic hardware sampler functionality has been mostly taken over by computers in music studios, but hardware samplers are still a great tool for sparking creativity and setting up first version of tracks or beats.
