DAW stands for Digital Audio Workstation and is basically a device or software that is used for editing or producing digital audio.
A DAW normally combines sections for arranging, mixing, editing and recording and is therefore the central part of a digital music production setup.
With the use of a DAW come many advantages such as copy and paste functionality, undo options and of course full recall of mixer settings besides possibilities of editing sounds, automation and recording audio.
Well known DAWs include Ableton, FL Studio, Cubase and Logic.
